Factory FarmKrochmal Farms does not wish to be called a Factory Farm, but we believe this term is consistent with the methods used by this operation to raise pigs. "Factory Farm" is not a technical term used by the government. While "Large" is not defined with a number in any of these definitions, the Mass. DAR does acknowledge that the Finisher Building which houses the pigs is "not prevalent in Massachusetts where pig farms are generally smaller".[1] We argue that 5,000 pigs in North Carolina 3 miles from residents is not much different than 800-1000 confined pigs TWO HUNDRED YARDS from residents. We also believe strongly that this style of raising pigs in a building with an 500,000 gallon waste holding tank[1] and 50 inch fans is the reason that neighborhoods in two towns and businesses in a third town have suffered greatly. The timing of the construction of the Finisher building and subsequent odor problems in three towns should not be ignored or brushed off. Again, we are not anti-farm. We are protesting the diminished quality of life caused by this one operation. Reference.com Webster's Dictionary Encarta Online |
